Our Governors

Have you ever wondered why our School has Governors?

The work of the Governors often appears to be a bit of a mystery to many.  Here, we explain the work of the Governors, what value that work adds to our School and why it is so important.

On the Governing Board there are people representing different groups such as Parents, Teachers and members of the local community.

The overall purpose of the Governing Board is to help St. Giles Junior School provide the best possible education for its pupils, in order to develop every child's full potential.

This involves, in particular:

  • Monitoring and evaluating performance and acting as a critical friend to the Head Teacher, in order to   support and challenge them in managing the school
  • Setting the school's vision and strategic aims, agreeing plans and policies and making creative use of resources
  • Ensuring that the school is accountable to the children and parents it serves, its local community, those who fund and maintain it, as well as the staff it employs

Good governance makes an impact in the classroom and St. Giles Junior School Governors aim to contribute to high standards of attainment, together with good quality teaching and pupil behaviour.

The Governors actively support the School and staff with the implementation of the School Curriculum, Local Authority requirements and the National Curriculum Regulations.

The Governors aim to encourage a caring partnership between the School, Parents and Governors based on trust and a shared understanding in order that the child's education can be for the benefit of the child, school and community.

Reconstitution

To comply with new regulations, the Governors have reviewed the structure of the Governing Board during the year. The purpose of this review is to ensure that the Governing Board is of an appropriate size to allow effective decision making whilst also containing the necessary skills and experience.

Following this review, the Governing Board shall consist of 15 Governors. This consists of the Head Teacher, 1 Governor nominated by the Local Authority, 1 Governor selected by the school’s staff, 3 Governors selected by the parents and 9 Co-Opted Governors appointed by the Governing Board itself.

The newly constituted Governing Board took effect from 17th July 2015

Much of our work is divided across two committees which meet once every half term.

Our two sub committees are:

  • Resources

This committee oversees the financial management of the school.  We work closely with  the School Business Manager to ensure we spend our budget wisely with the most impact on children's learning.  We also oversee all new staff appointments and consider what is the best staffing structure for the school.

  • Pupils

This committee challenges attainment levels in the school.  We receive reports from school leaders about how well students are doing and ask searching questions about how we can continually make this better.

We also oversee any changes to the curriculum or introduction of new teaching styles.

We have attached our Committee Meeting Schedule for this year at the bottom of this page.  All our meetings are open meetings and any parents / carers of students currently attending the school can attend to observe

A copy of our Meeting Protocol is attached: Open Meeting Protocol - June 2016.pdf

When can Parents contact a Governor?

Anytime!

The Governors are always keen to talk to Parents and hear their views on the school, the school can only be really successful if the School, Governors and Parents work together.

Governors can help with issues that affect the whole school, such as policies and targets.

If you have any questions about one of the school’s policies, or feel that some changes are needed, you are welcome to raise this with a Governor.   All communication and correspondence is treated with confidentiality and a response will be given to any issues raised.

If you have a specific concern or complaint we would encourage you to speak to a Teacher or the Head Teacher first, but if you are unwilling to do this, for any reason, please speak to a Governor.

How do Parents contact a member of the Governing Board?

Governors attend all major school events including Parents Evenings and we can be contacted via the school office, or you can contact our Chair of Governors (Amanda Gardiner) by e-mail on  the following e-mail address: gardiner.a@welearn365.com

We look forward to meeting with you throughout the school year as, together, we can improve the life chances for our children by offering them high quality learning experiences in a safe and happy environment.

The attached calendar lists the dates of the meeting scheduled for the school year.
